Shot Girl Giveaway Winner and a bit of other business

Our Shot Girl giveaway winner is Dru of Notes from Me. Dru is a reader of epic proportions, and I know she was looking forward to the release of Shot Girl almost as much as I was, so I'm happy she won. (I would have been happy if anyone else had won, too, but obviously for different reasons). I've started Shot Girl and it's absolutely as wonderful as I expected it to be, so for those of you who didn't win - get thee to a (preferably independent) bookstore, or go here to buy it!

I want to apologize for my lack of comments on blogs recently. I will be even more scarce over the next week, as I am off to NYC to help my mother begin getting ready to move out of the building where she's lived for 47 years. The good news is that she's moving to be closer to us, and she's very excited about where she's moving to, but needless to say, it's hard to give up the city that's been her heart and soul for a total of 63 years now.

I'll be on and reading as I can. I'll also be posting some comments on Proposition 8 and other ballot measures later in the week. We still have a long, long way to go towards eradicating prejudice in this country.

No What's Cooking Wednesday this week, as I'll be happily experiencing NYC take-out.

yep I noticed your comments were scarce. I miss reading your opinion on some things, as I value your opinion very much.

I am very glad you found a good solution for your mother though that you are both happy with. Nevertheless it might be a tough and emotional change! I am sending a big hug over!!!!!!!! Take care and enjoy the NY take-out :p

Good luck with helping your Mom move. I hope she weathers the transition OK and settles into her new digs quickly!

Enjoy the takeout!

((hugs!))

Have a good trip darling! What is NY take out? A restaurant? Do you know that Peter from Kalofagas is also travelling to NY in short?

Hope the move of your mom is good :D

The weather her is predicted to be in the 50s with rain tomorrow.

I hope things go well with the move.

Thanks so much, Lilac. I'm excited about the outcome, but my heart is aching for her over this transition.

Hey Goofball! Thanks for the kind words. I miss being around, but that will change soon, I hope. ;-)

It is, indeed, Chani. And it will be nice to have a respite from cooking, much as I love it.

April, your materials have helped on that score, too. There was also an Arkansas proposal that needs coverage and I'm trying to learn about others.

Betsy, it's going to be months, I'm afraid... this is just the first trip out there. She has a lot to close down, mostly emotionally.

Nuria - take-out is another word for carry away. In other words, you can order from restaurants and they'll bring it in - whatever thing you like! Since it's hard for my mom to get out, and she has NO kitchen equipment to speak of, this ends up being the solution. ;-)

Maryann - thanks so much! I really appreciate it.

Dru - thanks for the weather report - my next stop was going to be to check out weather because the temp. REALLY dropped in MI today. I hate bringing bulky coats on the plane.

Leslie, thanks, but I'll probably mostly see the two rooms of my mom's apt. - we have a "to-do" list a mile long. It will be good to see her, though!

Enjoy NYC. I remember moving my parents out of the house they lived in for 20 years. I do not envy you your task.

And really enjoy NY take-out. Yummy!

Best wishes to you and your mom on her move. It's hard for me to tear myself away from NYC after being there for a weekend. Wishing her a smooth transition to her new place.

Oh! Missed you by one week! I just got back from a week in NYC! And yes Prop 8 was a travesty. I was shocked by that. Totally shocked.

Wow, 63 years. I have never been to NYC before and catch myself cringing when the wife suggests taking a trip there.

But I do believe it is more than just a city - it is a state of mind, and you connect with that like your mother obviously has, it would make it difficult to leave.

Dismantling one's existence (particularly when it's so deeply and happily rooted) and reassembling it elsewhere can be overwhelming. Your mom is so fortunate to have you working through this time of transition with her.
