I just got this important e-mail...

Jennifer --

Today, the thoughts and prayers of all Americans are with those in the path of Hurricane Gustav -- and many of you are asking what you can do to help.

We do not yet know what the impact of Hurricane Gustav will be, and we hope with all our hearts that the damage will not be as great as it was three years ago.

But we know there will be damage, and there is something you can do right now.

Your financial support will strengthen organizations like the American Red Cross that are evacuating Gulf Coast residents and planning to help communities get back on their feet.

Make a donation to support the American Red Cross today.

At times like this, it is our compassion and resilience that define who we are as a nation.

Please give whatever you can afford, even $10, to make sure the American Red Cross has the resources to help those in the path of this storm:

https://donate.barackobama.com/redcross

Thank you for your generosity, and I hope you will join Michelle and me in praying for the safety of those in the path of the storm and the first responders who are doing all they can to ensure the safety of their communities.

Barack

On the actual Red Cross page, there is this warning, so if you get an e-mail from Madeline Cox as given below, PLEASE ignore it:

Fraudulent Email Alert
Currently, a fraudulent email posing as the American Red Cross is soliciting members of the public. The email describes the sender as “Madelyn Cox no-reply@redcrossaidinfo.us”. This is NOT a legitimate email. Do not give your personal information to this email. This and other such abuses are immediately brought to the attention of American Red Cross’ legal department. We are alerting the public as well, to ensure that donors’ personal contact details are not compromised.

Save the Children
Another agency I've supported for over 25 years is Save the Children. They are helping with relief efforts for the flooding in India and the earthquake in China, and I'm certain they'll be setting up funds for the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean areas damaged by Gustav. You can reach them here .

Thanks Jen, I'm on the Obama mailing list so it's good you gave heads up. Oh and I set myself up on sparkpeople :) thanks for the tip.

The best policy seems to be to never send personal information on email. Ever. There's no legitimate service that is going to ask for that kind of thing.

I see another person on SparkPeople. :)

Just to make it clear - the e-mail from the Obama campaign was NOT fraudulent - it was hoping to get supporters mobilized to help the Red Cross.

It's the Madeline Cox e-mail that's the fraudulent one.

I got the same email from the Obamas. But today I felt compelled to give money to another cause - Planned Parenthood.

Tomorrow, the Red Cross!

Hey, and I see you're participating in Blog Action Day. Me, too!
I donated this week to the No on 8 campaign (the anti-gay marriage prop on the ballot here in CA). But next week, I will donate to Red Cross.

Got the same Obama email. And very good to know about the madelyn cox email. Ick. You can always trust someone to take advantage of people's suffering and people's compassion. Disgusting.

I am always so heartened when I see people helping others and then sickened that there are people who would seek to benefit from someone else's misfortune. What is wrong with these people?!

Brillig and Dingo- I couldn't agree more.

Brittany - just go to barackobama.com - you'll get set up there.
