1. You get to stay up past your bedtimes.
2. Laughter.
3. You have a nice, clean house the next day.
4. Your friend's lemon pound cake.
5. An excuse to make these.
6. Your son is happy to watch a movie and eat what you had an excuse to make (ie. he's happily occupied, and so are you).
7. The realization that none of you really liked the book that much.
8. Allowing the not-so-great book to provide a great springboard for discussion about ethnic heritage, backgrounds, and parental expectations.
9. Going off topic. Repeatedly.

Any gathering where people actually talk to each other beyond the surface is bound to be good! :)
And it gives you a chance to read something besides Dr Suess.
You're right, Chani - and I think that's part of the reason we had so much fun!
Oh, Marye! That's so funny, because at one point we asked what everyone thought of the book. And most of us were luke warm, but one person said, "I kind of liked it!" And we asked what, specifically, she liked, and her response was, "Because it was a book for grown-ups!" ;-)
As far as I'm concerned, #2, 4/5, and 9 are the real point of any book club. In mine, we seldom make it on topic. It sounds like you had a wonderful time -- glad to hear it!
I agree, Anno - I think those are marvelous reasons for book clubs! I wasn't quite sure how this one would go, as you know.
Oh, it sounds like a wonderful evening. Lots of conversation, good food.
I LOVE lemon pound cake. And those brownies look fabulously delicious.
I would join that book club, any day.
I'd love to join a book club. The pressure of being the only one who didn't read the material is exactly what I need to get me through a book :) Oh, and the pound cake helps too ;)
Wish you lived closer, Amy! The lemon poundcake was apparently the recipe from the Moosewood Cookbook. I'm going to have to make it.
Sandy - we actually had someone, the person who most wanted to read the book, not finish the book, lol. It didn't matter - we all had a good time!
YUMM.You made those brownies. I love a good get together and converstaion. Wh cares is the book wasnt good. You all got that out of the way and got down to the good stuff!
All are the perfect reasons to have a book club. I love when the talks turn to other topics.
Glamah, you are so right! Nothing like an evening with the girls. (Chocolate helps, too.)
Dru, I agree 400%.
Maybe I should host something like this at home!
I love the excuse...and #9 of course! :)
Sounds like fun to me.. (((HUGS)))
Those are all great reasons to have a book club.
The brownies look delicious!!
Mariposa and Jan - it was a good time!
NYC - they were to die for. Marye wasn't exaggerating at all. She named her recipe properly. My "add in" was 3/4 cup of bittersweet chocolate chips, and that probably helped, too.
it sounds like fun but a book club would cause me too much stress. Too much pressure to read something for a certain date.
My current book is now halfway and I've been reading it for more than 4 weeks I think. Other books get finished within 10 days. My reading speed can vary very much and the last thing I need is another thing on my "must do" list.
One of the best things about NOT being a student is one can choose to not read a book.
I don't know if I could be in a book club; I seem to have to read according to a willy-nilly internal agenda. It might be interesting to see if I could tame this little beast.
I'm dying to know what the book was!!
Sounds like a fun night :)
Sounds like so much fun. I'd love to be part of a book club.
Lemon pound cake is one of my favorite things, too! :)
Goofball and Greg - this has been an experiment for all of us - it was our first meeting. There are actually ten of us, and others of us are meeting next Tuesday at another member's house. I'll be at both because I was the organizer. I agree about the pressure to read, but it really wasn't bad.
Becca - Believe it or not, it was The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. I loved The Interpreter of Maladies, but this one just left me cold a bit, although there were elements of it that were lovely. That was kind of what the consensus was.
Sarita, maybe you should try to start one? All you need is a couple of other friends who like to read.
I would love to find a good book club around here. I love to read, but most of my friends just aren't that into it. Hmmm. Maybe I need to find some new friends? ;)
Susan, sometimes book stores will have them, too. We have them at both the big box stores (B&N) and independent book stores around here.
i want to come to YOUR book club. the one I was breifly in died.
by the way, I'm so glad you had the Obama widget, which I copied, because oddly enough I could not find it on his site ANYWHERE, although I looked and looked. You must be a better looker than I.
You know, PM, I believe I found the widget either through Gunfighter or Carol (or Carol found it through me, lol). It's a great, quick-loading widget.
Haha. I though of you and book clubs as I watched this movie last night Little Children with Kate Winslet. There is this one scene of a book club discussing Madame Boavary and no one liked it except the adulterous character played by Kate, who was the youngest one in the room. Was a little comical to me with the older ladies breaking down the 'sex' scenes.I need to join one!
First I need to find some friends who live near me...then I will start one up! I have always wanted to join one!
Oh, Glamah, I can see that being a really funny scene. The "somewhat" graphic sex scene in The Namesake was a deal-breaker for one of our readers... I just take those in stride - I feel sex is just part of life.
Ben and Jenn, I've wanted to join a book club forever, too, which is why I started this one, lol. Jenn, it must be hard to move to an entirely new place even with your love. Ben, EVERYWHERE should have a good public transportation system. We don't really here, either.
Maybe we should start an online book club? We can do that via some kind of chat set-up?
I like that idea with live chat sessions via Skype or something.
Well, I'll definitely put out a feeler post, then. It would be great fun!
I love the last two :)
Did I miss which book was discussed? Sorry if it was mentioned in an earlier post; my mom ate my blog time ;)
*sigh* I'm jealous of book club members.
Michelle - I didn't say which book, but it was The Namesake.
April, it's was definitely a nice time!
