Farmers Market Thursday - June 19, 2008

lettuces
asparagus
spring onions
spinach
dandelion greens
beets
fresh oregano

strawberries
spicy greens mix
carrots
tatsoi

The variety is growing at Tantre...

And then we bought:

squash blossoms
fresh mozzarella from Zingerman's Creamery
a rhubarb truffle, Leopold Bros. Blackberry Truffle, and Leapin' Lemon from Sweet Gem Confections

C is at camp this week, which means D and I can eat vegetarian and eat some things that he might turn away from.

This must be the week for squash blossom yens, because both Shana, from The Gastronomical Three, and Mae, from Mae's Food Blog, made similar recipes this week. I will be going their route, as well, although I think I'm going to use some of the fresh mozzarella.

At this point, with the strawberries, we're just eating them fresh. They're too good to do otherwise.
I'm making a huge pot of minestrone today, using spinach, some homemade chicken broth, the carrots, beets, canned tomatoes, canellini beans and some pasta.
We plan to wrap the asparagus in proscuitto and grill it.
I'll also do a stir fry with the tatsoi, spicy greens mix, some of the carrots and onions, and some marinated tofu.
And, of course, salads.

The strawberries really are at their best, aren't they! We ate them on cereal this morning.

I had some for breakfast, too, but just plain. They are way too good right now!

Can I just move in with you?

Jen said...

Well, at least you wouldn't have to take Flemish lessons. ;-)

my brother in law has radishes in his garden that he can't control anymore and they've eaten more than enough radishes already.

So we liberated them from a big stack and my lunch nowdays consists of sandwiches with white cheese spread with slices of radish. Njam!

strawberries are always at their best plain (with a litttttle bit of mint added to them though).

Goofball - strawberries and mint and a touch of balsamic vinegar! Perfect. And I love sliced radishes on baguette with butter.

Feed me. I love the squash blossons. So delish. Its funny normally younger kids are vegetarians now, but you have to wait for him to go to camp!

C is such a meat and potatoes guy. Ugh! I don't know where he gets it from, honestly, as neither D nor I am. He has that "texture" thing that some kids have, but he seems to be growing out of it, slowly but surely.

What beautiful food! Your produce posts always make my mouth water! Enjoy!

Do you have some open air markets near you, Betsy? I always loved those when biking - the best snack bar, ever!

Beautiful pictures! I stopped by the market on my way to summer school.

Isn't that Zingermans cheese the best? I don't even like cheese that much and I love that mozzarella.

I can't wait til our July 12 get together!!!

Now I am HUNGRY!
:)

Patti, it rocks! I don't love the new smoked version, but I just adore the fresh stuff.

Maria, thanks so much! Is the Boy an adventurous eater or no?

Maria said...

He'll try just about anything, and he likes most of it. We're lucky. :)

We've been eating strawberries right out of our gardent his month. Yum.

Is there a way to cook the squash blossoms WITHOUT egg?

Jen said...

Maria, that's wonderful! It will serve him very well.

Amy... hmmm... buttermilk? I think that might serve a similar purpose.

Oh man, there you go again! Tempting me to eat my vegetables!

Jen said...

Hey Anno, a couple of my fave vegetable recipes I got from you!

Great finds! But my heart belongs to those zuccini blossoms!! so hard to find here.

Jen said...

That seems so strange - you're in Chicago, right? I wonder why they're easier to find in Ann Arbor. Do you have a local Farmers Market somewhere near?

Marianne Arkins said...

Wait... wait... you EAT squash blossoms? Really????

I had NO idea.

Jen said...

They're really delicious, Marianne - check out the links for Mae and Shana. I'm making my filling with fresh mozzarella and sauteed garlic scapes.

Wow! You made out like a bandit this week! Your haul looks gorgeous! I am so lemming those squash blossoms. I can never find them here. I have a few zucchini plants growing, so maybe I'll score a few. ;)

Momisodes said...

That all looks so amazing! There's nothing like fresh mozzarella, yummmm :)

Jen said...

Susan, the main thing is that it's the boy flowers that are the best, from what I hear. They were, indeed, delicious!

Sandy, I agree. I can only use it in very small amounts or I inhale it!

Over here it's the height of cherry season. yum!!

Jen said...

Oh, NYC - I LOVE cherries - they're my very favorite. Happily Michigan is very rich in cherries once the season hits.
