Music Monday - "Respect" - Aretha Franklin

For other tales of musical adventure, please visit Soccer Mom in Denial.

You know, if there's one song of all time that I can go back to and back to, it's probably this one. I'm a huge fan of Aretha's talent; living in Michigan, I haven't always been a fan of Aretha's diva shenanigans. Be that as it may, there may be no better battle cry for women, or simply for humans. If we can't treat each other with respect, we ain't got nothing.

Since somehow this blog and youtube seem to have broken up, I leave you with this link.

Party on!

PM and Lilac - I figured there's no way to go wrong with Aretha!

Me, too, Sarita. I listened to many versions of this song throughout her career last night, and I really love her more mature voice, even, as it is in this version. The living can be heard!

Oh, CG, I'm so glad! We DO have us some good music here in MI. ;-)

If there's a person who doesn't love this song, I don't want to know him! (Could never be a "her" :)

Excellent choice.

Respect and Natural Woman are my favorite Aretha tunes. I saw her in concert once and in her day she put on a show for you, diva and all.

Have a good Monday.

That's a great one that folks will probably still be singing in 100 years... and we need more r-e-s-p-e-c-t in our world. More than ever before.

I must honestly say that I associate this song in the first place with a commercial in which it is played all the time.

And that sucks since it's such a powerful song...but can't help thinking of boring commercials at the same time

Jen said...

Hey Everyone! I'm glad there are so many other Aretha fans out there! Hope you partied on into your Monday!

Jen said...

Oops... Goofball just saw your comment, that IS, indeed, a bummer. This song should only be associated with woman power.

She is and will always be the Queen of Soul.

One of my favorite artists.

Love this song! No need for a link, just the mention of the song has me singing it in my head :)

Great choice!

Good song--that woman can clean out the wax in your ears! What pipes. She can bring down the house, and you'd be stamping your applause under the rubble.

You know, if you sing that song, you rather have to cop an "attitude" ;-) as it just can't be sung quietly.

Lol! Back in the day, I certainly spent my share of time crying in my soup while listening to this song. This one and "I Will Survive"

You don't mess with The Queen of Soul, that's for sure. I have the greatest admiration for Aretha. Her "Amazing Grace" album makes me weak in the knees.

"Battle cry" indeed! Love it.

There is only one thing better than hearing Aretha sing this wonderful tune.

That is watching tons of people murder it during American idol tryouts.

Hi Jen! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Much appreciated! You can't beat the Queen of Soul!

I love this song, for many reasons. But, it will always remind me of a girl named Erin that I knew in school...

It was 8th grade and we were having a spelling test. Our teacher, Mrs. Fisher is administering our test orally. She gives the word: Respect. And Erin sings out, "R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me!"

It was a very funny moment.
